About Us

The Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA) is an Arm’s Length Body sponsored by the Department of Health (DoH) in Northern Ireland. Its primary role is to oversee and deliver postgraduate education and training for resident doctors and dentists across the region. NIMDTA is responsible for recruiting, selecting, and allocating medical and dental professionals to foundation, core, and specialty training programmes. It ensures that trainees receive high-quality education and supervision, enabling them to develop the skills necessary to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the population. The agency also plays a key role in quality assurance, working closely with Health and Social Care (HSC) Trusts and general practices to maintain high standards in training environments.

Beyond initial training, NIMDTA supports the continued professional development of healthcare practitioners, helping them maintain competence and achieve revalidation through structured appraisal systems. It also provides opportunities for trainees to engage in leadership, research, teaching, and quality improvement initiatives. NIMDTA is accountable to both the General Medical Council (GMC) and the General Dental Council (GDC) for ensuring that training standards are met. Through its governance structure and partnerships, NIMDTA contributes significantly to the sustainability and excellence of healthcare delivery in Northern Ireland.
