Course Aims

  • To understand and apply best practice in handling complaints, confidentiality and reflective practice.
  • To help health professionals increase their effectiveness in providing brief opportunistic support to patients/ clients in their care who want to stop smoking.
  • To equip dental professionals with the knowledge and practical strategies to effectively build and maintain a Record of Competency required for the Foundation Dentist Dental Nursing course

Course Objectives

List of objectives for the course

  • That the attendees will explore the concepts of confidentiality and handling complaints and apply the learning to their current practice.
  • That the attendees will recognise the value of reflection and integrate it into their professional lives.Objective 1
  • Be aware of the current prevalence of smoking in Northern Ireland and the UK.
  • Explore the wide-ranging effects of smoking on the body.
  • Have a knowledge of oral cancer – the incidence, causes and signs.
  • Have an informed understanding of the complex nature of tobacco use.
  • Explore the reasons why people start to smoke and why they want to stop.
  • Examine the stages of change approach by Prochaska and DiClemente and applied it for use in changing smoking behaviour.
  • Look at VBA and Brief Intervention to assess individuals to provide appropriate guidance and support for their stage of stopping smoking.
  • Have an awareness of the current aids to stop smoking.
  • Be aware of all nicotine containing products, eg e-cigs, pouches, Heat not burn.
  • Be informed about further sources of support available.Objective 2
  • Identify key components that should be included in a RoC.
  • Apply best practices for documenting learning and development activities.
  • Reflect on personal learning and professional growth through RoC entries.Objective 3

Explore Experiential Learning. Introducing Reflective Practice and why it’s important for professional growth.

Stop smoking advice, effective communication with smokers, effective stop smoking medications, local support services.

This training session is intended to create an awareness and understanding of the requirements of the ROC.
