Course Description
Safe Practitioner, Development of Competence, FD Trainee Needs, A Successful Foundation Relationship & Time Management
Aim
Prepare the dental nurse to work with an Early Years Foundation Dentist (EYFD) and promote effective team working in a learning environment.
Objectives
At the end of this session the participant will:
- Demonstrate knowledge of strategies to support an Early Years Foundation Dentist
- from being a safe beginner to an independent practitioner in general dental practice.
- Understand what the term a ‘safe beginner’ means in Dental Foundation Training, and the pathway required for Early Years Foundation Dentists to satisfactorily complete foundation training.
- Provide efficient chair – side assistance including the use of extended competencies to support the Early Years Foundation Dentist, encouraging best practice during every patient case.
- Appreciate the challenges faced by the Early Years Foundation Dentist and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with both patient and colleague to ensure best practice.
Learning Content
This training will enable the dental nurse to appreciate the challenges and opportunities for an Early Years Foundation Dentist (EYFD) in the context of the Dental Foundation Training programme. It will equip the dental nurse to support the EYFD and reduce potential risk factors for patients and the dental practice.

Infection, Prevention and Control
Aim
To review infection prevention and control standards and how we work with a foundation dentist.
Objectives
- Highlight the need for a team approach to IPC.
- Outline the 10 standard infection prevention and control precautions.
- Indicate the importance of hand hygiene and personal protective equipment.
- Highlight concerns around blood borne viruses.
- Safely use sharps to prevent occupational exposures.

To refresh the information on the topic of decontamination in general practice and local guidance documents pertaining to it.
Objectives
At the end of this session the participant will:
- Highlight the decontamination roles.
- Outline the decontamination cycle.
- Identify improvements in the LDU workflow
- Indicate the guidance for local decontamination
- Accurately complete Steriliser testing sheets
- Awareness of the IPC decontamination audit
