Course Description

Medical Emergencies & Basic Life Support / Safeguarding

This study day equips dental trainees with the essential knowledge and practical skills to confidently manage medical emergencies and uphold safeguarding responsibilities within the dental environment. Through a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on training, trainees will develop the competence to respond effectively to unwell patients and ensure the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable individuals.

Course Aims

  • To help dental trainees improve patient care and feel more confident managing acutely ill adult patients. We will introduce a simple, effective system for patient assessment and emergency response.
  • The course will also cover key medical drugs—how to select, prepare, and administer them safely, including correct dosages, routes, and contraindications.
  • To provide a basic level of knowledge on safeguarding structures and legislation within Northern Ireland as this applies to children and vulnerable adults.

Course Objectives

  • Assess and treat the unwell patient using the structured A–E (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure) approach.
  • Prepare and deliver emergency oxygen safely and effectively.
  • Recognise and manage medical emergencies in the dental setting, including drug indications, contraindications, preparation, and administration.
  • Perform Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR for adults and children, including safe use of an AED and understanding legal and ethical responsibilities.
  • Define vulnerable adults and identify at-risk adults and children.
  • Understand safeguarding procedures, including when, how, and to whom to refer concerns.
  • Recognise types of abuse and apply safeguarding principles: empowerment, protection, prevention, proportionality, partnership, and accountability.
