Course Description
This course gives dental professionals a practical overview to conscious sedation in dentistry. The morning session covers the full set‑up, use, and shut‑down procedures for portable inhalation sedation equipment, along with the key safety features and checks required for safe practice. The afternoon session also demonstrates how to prepare for intravenous sedation, including predictable cannulation techniques for the dorsum of the hand and ante‑cubital fossa.
Format of the Day:
09.30 – 11.30 Inhalation sedation only
11.30 – 12.30 For all
12.30 – 1 Lunch (for those attending all day)
13.00 – 16.00 Intravenous sedation only
Course Aims
- To Provide an overview and recap of the theory content of conscious sedation and anxiety management in dental practice
- To Deliver Practical demonstration of the set up, use and shut down of the portable inhalation
sedation machine and scavenging equipment - To Demonstrate the safety features and safety checks for the portable inhalation sedation
machine - To Demonstrate how to predictably cannulate a patient in the dorsum of the hand and
ante-cubital fossa sites - To Demonstrate how to set up for an intravenous sedation appointment
- To Demonstrate the process for recovering and discharging a sedation patient
- To Demonstrate the clinical monitoring equipment utilised in sedation and how to use
them on a patient as well as interpret the readings given - To Recap the current sedation guidelines and standards as they apply to practitioners in
Northern Ireland - To Discuss real life examples of dental sedation cases
Course Objectives
- To be able to define conscious sedation in dentistry
- To be able to set up, use and shut down a portable inhalation sedation machine in a systemised
manner - To be able to carry out the portable inhalation sedation machine safety checks
- To know how to cannulate in preparation for supervised cases
- To demonstrate how to set up for, as well as monitor, recover and discharge a sedation patient
- To indicate the current Northern Ireland dental sedation guidelines
