Course Description
This course provides a concise, evidence-based overview of MRONJ for general dental practitioners. Participants will develop an understanding of the condition’s pathophysiology, risk factors and diagnosis, and will explore current guidance on prevention, treatment planning and referral pathways. The course will support clinicians to make informed, confident decisions when caring for patients at risk of, or affected by, MRONJ, helping to optimise patient outcomes while maintaining safe and effective dental care.
Course Aims
To provide a clear, evidence-based overview of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ), enabling general dental practitioners to recognise risk factors, identify early clinical features, and support effective prevention and optimised management in clinical practice.
Course Objectives
- Define MRONJ and understand its pathophysiology and risk factors.
- Identify associated medical history and drug factors and understand their relative risks.
- Summarise the diagnostic criteria and staging based on contemporary guidelines.
- Understand the evidence-based prevention strategies, including pre-treatment dental assessment.
- Apply current guidelines to support safe, confident decision-making in general dental practice, including when to treat, monitor or refer.
Course Learning Content
This session provides a practical, evidence-based overview of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) for general dental practitioners. It covers key risk factors and causative medications, early and established clinical features, and current understanding of pathophysiology. Emphasis is placed on prevention, including pre-treatment dental assessment and risk reduction strategies, alongside appropriate management pathways, referral indications, and application of current guidance to support decision-making for clinicians in primary care.
