Course Description

To introduce Dental Foundation Dentists (FDs) to the Northern Ireland Dental Foundation Training Scheme, establish a supportive relationship with their Adviser, identify individual learning goals and expectations, and clarify their roles and responsibilities. The programme also aims to improve standards of patient care and increase confidence in the assessment and management of acutely ill adult patients through a structured and accessible approach. To provide practical guidance on the medicines used in medical emergencies, including their indications, preparation, dosage, administration routes, and contraindications. The session uses interactive workshops and simulation-based training to build knowledge, skills and confidence through hands-on learning.

Course Aims

• To establish a supportive and professional relationship between the scheme Adviser and the FD.
• To identify the FDs goals, needs and expectations.
• To provide a comprehensive introduction to Dental Foundation Dentists on the Northern Ireland Dental Foundation Training Schemes; to include the working of the schemes, their role and responsibilities as Foundation Dentists and information on the expectations of Educational Supervisors, Advisers, the PGDD and patients.
• We aim to help dental practitioners improve the standard of care provided and increase their confidence in dealing with the acutely ill adult patient by learning an accessible patient assessment and management system.

• have been introduced to the Advisers and the Dental Administration team.
• demonstrate an understanding of their contract; Rate of pay / hours/ holidays and sickness.
• demonstrate an understanding of their responsibilities as employees in their various workplaces.
• demonstrate an understanding of the study day programme and the Advisers expectations for those days.
• demonstrate an understanding of the expenses for which they can claim, and of the information that is required to support the appropriate claim forms.
• identify how to access support and advice.
• demonstrate, recognise, assess & treat the “unwell” patient using a structured A, B, C, D, E approach.
• demonstrate preparation and delivery of emergency oxygen.
• recognise and manage medical emergencies in the dental practice following guidance from the British National Formulary “Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice”.
• Demonstrate indications/contraindications, preparation, administration & delivery of emergency drugs.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) & CPR Adult & Paediatric following Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines 2025, adapted from the ERC guidelines2025 and as recommended by (ILCOR) International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation.
• safe use of an AED and demonstrate awareness of legal, ethical and professional duty of care.
