Course Description
This interactive session is designed to equip dental professionals with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to recognise, challenge and prevent discrimination, microaggressions and unconscious bias in dental education and practice. Through discussion and case-based learning, participants will explore the impact of discrimination on colleagues, trainees, students and patient care, while examining the individual and systemic factors that contribute to inequity in the workplace. Delegates will develop the skills to identify and respond appropriately to discriminatory behaviour, challenge common myths about inclusion, and support the wellbeing of junior colleagues and dentists in training. Using evidence-based approaches, including the ARISE and 5D Active Bystander frameworks, participants will learn how to promote racial inclusion and contribute to more inclusive, equitable and respectful workplace cultures.
Course Aims
To equip dental professionals with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to challenge and prevent discrimination, microaggressions, and bias with dental education and practice. The session will promote racial inclusion, support the wellbeing of junior colleagues and dentists in training, and empower participants to act as effective active bystanders. Through discussion and case-based learning, delegates will explore both individual and systemic factors that contribute to discrimination and learn evidence-based approaches to building inclusive and equitable workplace cultures.

- Define unconscious bias and microaggressions and explain how they can manifest in clinical and educational settings
- Understand the impact of microaggressions and discrimination on healthcare professionals, students, and patient care.
- Recognise common myths and misconceptions relating to unconscious bias and inclusion.
- Analyse and respond appropriately to scenarios involving discrimination and microaggressions experienced by junior colleagues and trainees.
- Apply the ARISE and 5D active nbystander framework to safely challenge discriminatory behaviour and support those affected.
Course Learning Content
This session will explore racial inclusion with dentistry in Northern Ireland, examining current challenges and opportunities for creating inclusive workplaces and learning environments. Participants will develop an understanding of unconscious bias, microaggressions, and their impact on individuals, teams and patient care. Through simulated case studies based on the experiences of junior healthcare professionals and students on placement, participants will examine practical responses to discrimination. The session will introduce and apply the ARISE and 5D active bystander frameworks, enabling delegates to confidently intervene, support colleagues, and contribute to addressing systemic discrimination in dental practice and education.
