This training focuses on equipping dental team members with the skills and understanding needed to support Foundation Dentists (FDs) throughout their Dental Foundation Training. It outlines the expectations of a ‘safe beginner’ and the structured pathway toward independent practice, emphasizing the importance of clinical supervision, feedback, and gradual skill development.

Participants will learn how to provide efficient chair-side assistance using extended competencies to encourage best practice during every patient case. The course also highlights the challenges FDs may face—such as clinical confidence, communication, and time management—and teaches effective communication techniques to support both patient care and team collaboration, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment.

Course Aims

• The aim of this session is to give participants a brief overview of mental health, different mental illnesses and how to look after their mental wellbeing.

Course Objectives

At the end of this session participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of strategies to support a Foundation Dentist from safe beginner to an independent practitioner in General Dental Practice
• Provide insight into reasonable expectation of a ‘safe beginner’ & the pathway required for Foundation Dentists to satisfactorily complete Dental Foundation Training
• Provide efficient chair-side assistance including the use of extended competencies to support the Foundation Dentist encouraging best practice during every patient case
• Appreciate the challenges faced by the Foundation Dentist & demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with both patient & colleague to ensure best practice
