Course Aims

  • Familiarisation with current concepts in rubber dam isolation, enamel & dentine bonding and resin bonding agents.
  • Familiarisation with contemporary composite resin materials and their handling as well as protocols for matrix selection.
  • To complete a practical build-up of a Class 2 posterior cavity on plastic teeth.
  • To help health professionals increase their effectiveness in providing brief opportunistic support to patients/ clients in their care who want to stop smoking.

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate a greater understanding of the current principles involved in dentine bonding and resin composite systems.
  • Familiarise themselves with rubber dam placement and using new composite instruments, wedging and matrix systems.
  • Familiarise themselves with systematic placement, shaping and polishing techniques for Class 2 posterior composite restorations.Objective 1
  • Be aware of the current prevalence of smoking in Northern Ireland and the UK.
  • Explore the wide-ranging effects of smoking on the body.
  • Have a knowledge of oral cancer – the incidence, causes and signs.
  • Have an informed understanding of the complex nature of tobacco use.
  • Explore the reasons why people start to smoke and why they want to stop.
  • Examine the stages of change approach by Prochaska and DiClemente and applied it for use in changing smoking behavior.
  • Look at VBA and Brief Intervention to assess individuals to provide appropriate guidance and support for their stage of stopping smoking.
  • Have an awareness of the current aids to stop smoking.
  • Be aware of all nicotine containing products, eg e-cigs, pouches, Heat not burn.
  • Be informed about further sources of support available.

Course Learning Content

  • This hands-on training session is intended to create an understanding of composite material, dentine bonding agents, why and how to use rubber dam.
  • Stop smoking advice, effective communication with smokers, effective stop smoking medications, local support services.
