Course Description
This induction session is designed for Dental Core Trainees (DCTs) to build confidence and competence in managing acute clinical scenarios commonly encountered in hospital and community settings. Day 2 focuses on practical skills and clinical decision-making in urgent care situations. Through interactive teaching, hands-on workshops, and case-based discussions, trainees will enhance their ability to assess and manage patients with facial injuries, infections, and dental trauma.
Course Aims
- To equip Dental Core Trainees with essential clinical skills for managing acute dental and maxillofacial presentations.
- To foster safe and effective patient assessment and intervention in emergency settings.
- To support the transition into hospital-based practice through practical skill development.
Course Objectives
By the end of the session, trainees will be able to:
- Assess the injured patient using structured approaches to identify fractures and other trauma-related conditions.
- Recognise and manage infections in dental and maxillofacial contexts, including appropriate escalation and referral.
- Perform basic clinical procedures such as taking bloods and suturing under supervision.
- Understand the principles of managing acute dental trauma, including initial assessment, stabilisation, and follow-up care.
- Apply clinical reasoning in urgent care scenarios to ensure patient safety and appropriate treatment planning.
