Human Factors and Consent & Complaints

Course Aims

  • The aim of this session is to provide training to the dental team on the topics of human factors, communication, quality improvement, consent and complaints.

Course Objectives

  • Review reasons why patients complain and how these can be resolved.
  • Appreciate how the law on consent has evolved and how consent may be obtained and demonstrated in practice.
  • Explain the GDC expectations with regard to complaint handling and consent.
  • Recognise errors happen and the science of human factors and importance of communication.
  • Introduce quality improvement and change within the clinical environment.

Course Learning Content

This session is intended to create an understanding of the need to communicate well with patients and the wider team to ensure quality improvement, appropriate consent, handling of complaints and a team aware of how human factors influence productivity.
