Course Description
Hands on life support training
This course provides essential training in the recognition, prevention, and management of cardiopulmonary arrest, with a strong focus on early intervention and teamwork. Participants will learn to identify causes of deterioration, apply the ABCDE assessment approach, and perform high-quality CPR, defibrillation, and basic airway manoeuvres to support patient survival and recovery.
In addition to clinical skills, the course emphasizes the importance of non-technical competencies such as leadership, communication, and effective team dynamics during emergency situations. These skills are vital for coordinating care, making timely decisions, and ensuring a structured response to medical emergencies in any healthcare setting.
Course Aims
- This course is in-line with the 2015 Report of the Intercollegiate Advisory Committee For Sedation in Dentistry and aims to empower the Sedation team with the skills and competence to deal with medical emergencies common to dental practices including ILS and PILS (CPR), advanced airway management and the administration of first line drugs such as oxygen, adrenaline, glucose, glucagon, midazolam, aspirin and salbutamol.
Course Objectives
At the end of this session participants will be able to:
- Identify the causes and promote the prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest
- Recognise and treat the deteriorating patient using the ABCDE approach
- Undertake the skills of quality CPR and defibrillation and simple airway manoeuvres
- Utilise non-technical skills to facilitate initial leadership and effective team membership
