Course Aims
- To equip orthodontic therapists with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to safely and effectively deliver air polishing therapy, particularly in the context of managing biofilm and staining around orthodontic appliances..
Course Objectives
- Understand the principles and mechanisms of air polishing therapy.
- Identify the indications and contraindications for air polishing in orthodontic patients.
- Compare air polishing with traditional methods of stain and biofilm removal.
- Select appropriate powders and equipment based on patient needs and appliance types.
- Demonstrate safe and effective air polishing techniques on patients with fixed orthodontic appliances.
- Apply infection control and health and safety protocols during air polishing procedures.
- Evaluate patient outcomes and deliver appropriate aftercare advice.
Course Learning Content
Describe the clinical principles of air polishing and its role in orthodontic care.
Explain the differences between supragingival and subgingival air polishing powders and when each is appropriate.
Identify suitable air polishing powders (e.g., glycine, erythritol) and understand their properties and uses.
Perform air polishing therapy confidently and competently on orthodontic patients.
Assess patient suitability and manage risks associated with air polishing therapy.
Demonstrate effective patient communication regarding the procedure, benefits, and post-care.
