Course Aims
- To improve the confidence, knowledge and practical approach of dentists and hygienists in assessing, monitoring, recording and maintaining dental implants in general practice, and to support timely referral when peri-implant disease or complications are identified.
Course Objectives
- Identify healthy peri-implant tissues and recognise the clinical features of implant health.
- Recognise peri-implant disease, including peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis.
- Carry out implant monitoring using appropriate clinical assessment methods in general practice.
- Record implant findings appropriately, including baseline and ongoing peri-implant measurements.
- Understand when to refer patients with implant complications or progressive peri-implant disease.
- Understand their role in implant maintenance within the wider practice team.
Course Learning Content
The lecture will cover the principles of implant maintenance in general practice, including recognition of healthy peri-implant tissues and identification of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. It will explore risk factors such as periodontal history, smoking, plaque control, medical status, prosthetic design and maintenance compliance. Delegates will learn how to monitor implants using visual assessment, probing, bleeding and plaque scores, radiographs, occlusal and prosthetic review. The session will also cover appropriate clinical record keeping, supportive maintenance protocols, patient education, team responsibilities and when to refer patients with complications, progressive disease, implant mobility, pain or failure to respond to care.
