Course Aims

  • To give an overview on the constituents, properties and use of alginate as a dental impression material and the technique for making accurate alginate impressions of dentate patients.
  • To provide the knowledge and skills to apply rubber dam correctly and efficiently.
  • This session aims to discuss and explain the benefits of using dental intra-oral film holders and demonstrate the assembly of dental intra oral film holders.
  • To provide dental nurses with an understanding of quality improvement and the knowledge and skills to identify and carry out meaningful clinical audits in their practice which will benefit both patients and the clinical team.

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate knowledge of strategies to support a Foundation Dentist from safe practitioner to an independent practitioner in General Dental Practice.
  • Provide insight into reasonable expectation of a ‘safe practitioner’ & the pathway required for Foundation Dentists to satisfactorily complete Dental Foundation Training.
  • Provide efficient chair-side assistance including the use of extended competencies to support the Foundation Dentist encouraging best practice during every patient case.
  • Appreciate the challenges faced by the Foundation Dentist & demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with both patient & colleague to ensure best practice.

Course Learning Content

This training will enable the Dental Nurse to appreciate the challenges & opportunities for a Foundation Dentist in the context of the Dental Foundation Training Programme. It will equip the Dental Nurse to support the Foundation Dentist and reduce potential risk factors for patients & the Dental Practice.

It will develop the Dental Nurse’s skill set in impression taking and fitting rubber dam.
