Course Description

An Introduction to the SPPG, BSO, Dental Payments, NIMDTA’s Trainee Services, Fraud in the Health Service and APLAN.

Working as a Dental Foundation Dentist in the Health Service in Northern Ireland

This will take the form of some information giving and some small group working.

Aim

To give an overview of the Health Service in Northern Ireland and clinical governance as they relate to working in general dental practice.

Objectives

  • To outline the structure of the HSC in NI.
  • To outline the role of SPPG within the GDS including monitoring processes.
  • To outline and discuss the importance of record keeping.
  • To outline and discuss prescribing within dentistry including clinical prescribing, antimicrobial stewardship, and practical advice.
  • To outline governance issues of importance to new FDs.

Aim

To provide an overview of the BSO and its business areas.

Objectives

  • To discuss and outline the BSO’s business areas and functions.
  • To discuss the HSC Network.

  • To discuss dental payments and Top Sheet.

An Introduction to NIMDTA’s Trainee Services

Aim

To provide dental foundation dentists with an overview of the professional support unit and the services which can be accessed to support progression through training.

Objectives

  • Awareness of the potential influencing factors which can contribute to challenges in training.
  • Knowledge of your role in recognising the need for and accessing of support.
  • Define the role of the Profressional Support Unit.

Working Together to Tackle Fraud in Health and Social Care

Aims and Objectives

To provide an overview of:

  • what fraud can look like in the Health Service in Northern Ireland?
  • the role of dental practitioners and their responsibilities in relation to the payment of statutory dental charges by patients.
  • examples of criminal investigations in relation to fraud involving primary care practitioners.

APLAN

Aims

  • To introduce the APLAN online learning platform.
  • To provide information on the 3 types of APLAN cases.
  • Overview of format and presentations required for APLAN cases.
  • To provide feedback from previous participants.

Objectives

  • Understand how to access the APLAN on line learning platform.
  • Identify suitable cases for APLAN 1,2 and 3.
  • Be aware of the process for consenting patients.
  • Recognise the value of anonymous feedback.
